Summary

Move from a transactional experience with God to a transformational friendship with Him through prayer。

How can time with God be a source of peace in a loud and distracting world? In Beholding, spiritual director and poet Strahan Coleman invites readers to discover the joy of being with God, not just working for Him。 As they inhabit the art of resting in God’s presence, prayer becomes not only a place of seeking, but becoming。

Beholding calls Christians to understand how:

Prayer is so much more than spoken conversation between us and God; it’s a way of existing together。
Beholding God in prayer is profoundly connected to beholding and dignifying others。
Embracing prayer practices from different Christian traditions digs a deep well of peace in the soul。
Our everyday ordinary lives can become the meeting place for God through silence, solitude, community, creation, and hospitality。

I listened to this via audiobook, listening to Strahan’s fantastic New Zealand accent。 However it became apparent rather quickly that I was going to need the book as well because I was marking many passages in Audible that I knew I’d want to reference again。 I give this 4。5 stars。 There are SO MANY excellent thoughts and points, and it’s clear they come from a gentle and humble spirit。 But the last 3 chapters or so felt a little too prescriptive。 A re-read is in my future。

Some times the right book comes along at the right time。 This was one of those for me。 I’m not sure I have words to express it。 All I know is this book felt like a companion on my journey to beholding and being held by God—to see him seeing me through the eyes of love。

I listened to the audiobook and I'm so excited for the physical book to arrive。This is a book you want to read slowly。 It feels like a moment of rest in your day。 I let myself digest Strahan's words and stories while I was going about my day。Strahan articulates what our current culture needs - silence, communion, friendship, beholding。 The contemplative life can offer so much。He also articulates what we've been missing and where we have gone astray。 I think this book can be relatable for all spi I listened to the audiobook and I'm so excited for the physical book to arrive。This is a book you want to read slowly。 It feels like a moment of rest in your day。 I let myself digest Strahan's words and stories while I was going about my day。Strahan articulates what our current culture needs - silence, communion, friendship, beholding。 The contemplative life can offer so much。He also articulates what we've been missing and where we have gone astray。 I think this book can be relatable for all spiritual backgrounds because it speaks to the ache of the human experience。 I've bought this book as a gift for a friend and I'm looking forward to introducing more friends to it。Companiable silence is prophetic。 。。。more

Strahan。。。 this book is beautiful。 Thank you for putting into words many of the experiences that God has been leading me through over the recent years。 Thank you for showing me that I'm not crazy - that this invitation toward stillness and whole-life embrace of God's presence is central to a reconciled life in the Spirit of Jesus, even if it isn’t popular within my tradition of Christianity。 I feel reenergized with hope for my own "Beholding" life and for the 21st Century church; I know better n Strahan。。。 this book is beautiful。 Thank you for putting into words many of the experiences that God has been leading me through over the recent years。 Thank you for showing me that I'm not crazy - that this invitation toward stillness and whole-life embrace of God's presence is central to a reconciled life in the Spirit of Jesus, even if it isn’t popular within my tradition of Christianity。 I feel reenergized with hope for my own "Beholding" life and for the 21st Century church; I know better now how I can serve my brothers and sisters, extending and facilitating this invitation through our lives together in table fellowship and hospitable presence。 This book is exactly what I needed right now and I thank the Father for you and your contribution to the Body, for your courage to share your story。 。。。more

It's not often I find a book that marks me on such a profound level。 I found myself highlighting nearly every page, and chewing on every word for hours following my reading sessions。 I just wish I had the words to envelope what this book did in my heart + how it deeply impacted my personal relationship with the Father。 After being a believer my whole life, I thought I had prayer down pretty well, but was humbly made aware with every page of this book that there's such an invitation here for us a It's not often I find a book that marks me on such a profound level。 I found myself highlighting nearly every page, and chewing on every word for hours following my reading sessions。 I just wish I had the words to envelope what this book did in my heart + how it deeply impacted my personal relationship with the Father。 After being a believer my whole life, I thought I had prayer down pretty well, but was humbly made aware with every page of this book that there's such an invitation here for us all on a whole other level--a way of being and existing in Him。 A true covenant lifestyle in union with Him。 Strahan, thank you for being so in tune with the Spirit and so vulnerably sharing things he has deposited in you throughout your story。 This book is a gift。 。。。more

This book is paradigm-shifting。 Strahan has already made such an impact on my outlook on prayer through Commoners Communion, and this book naturally flows from the same place。 Strahan knows how to invite you into a deeper relationship with God and give helpful structure when prayer feels daunting。 This book is a gift to the Church and to anyone who feels intimated by prayer in such a loud world。

I have been impacted beyond words by the wisdom Strahan uses in his writings。 After reading his prayer volumes, this book was a perfect compliment to the groundwork he had been laying。 It is a breath of fresh air。 Word art for a church losing the beauty and intention of prayer。 In every chapter, the words rang true to the deep need I see in the church around me here in ATL, Georgia。 Strahan reminds us of the beauty of stopping and just BEHOLDING。 Seeing Yahweh for the still, confident beauty tha I have been impacted beyond words by the wisdom Strahan uses in his writings。 After reading his prayer volumes, this book was a perfect compliment to the groundwork he had been laying。 It is a breath of fresh air。 Word art for a church losing the beauty and intention of prayer。 In every chapter, the words rang true to the deep need I see in the church around me here in ATL, Georgia。 Strahan reminds us of the beauty of stopping and just BEHOLDING。 Seeing Yahweh for the still, confident beauty that he is。 Ever present, ever seeking a deeper relationship with us。 Thank you, Strahan, for your hard, bold and yet gentle words。 My new favorite book! 。。。more

What compels me most about Strahan’s words in Beholding isn’t so much what he writes。 Although, to be sure, the ideas he presents are revelatory—words to walk with as we find our way by faith on the path into God。 But what strikes me most is how he writes—from a depth of heart which overflows from lived experience。 Thomas Merton once said, “It’s not often we find people with whom we can discuss such things。” And that’s been my story, as I grope my way toward a rested life in God。 Reading Beholdi What compels me most about Strahan’s words in Beholding isn’t so much what he writes。 Although, to be sure, the ideas he presents are revelatory—words to walk with as we find our way by faith on the path into God。 But what strikes me most is how he writes—from a depth of heart which overflows from lived experience。 Thomas Merton once said, “It’s not often we find people with whom we can discuss such things。” And that’s been my story, as I grope my way toward a rested life in God。 Reading Beholding is like sitting with a friend of God—one with whom we *can* discuss such things。This book echoes wisdom from both Scripture and the Church through the ages, while bringing fresh language and paradigms which meet us where we are。 How do we live whole lives of communion with God and one another in our post-everything world, as we’re inundated with noise and distraction? What about when crisis hits and we can’t relate with God the way we use to? What might it look like for us to create spaces in our communities to allow God to woo us into beholding lives?Strahan, through his writing, bears witness to the freedom and joy found in a prayer-soaked life without ignoring the very real challenges of our fallen world and of our generation。 I couldn’t be more grateful for this book。 。。。more

I was so excited for this book because of the way Strahan’s music and poems have changed the way I viewed my relationship with God。 Yet again his writing does such a good job of pointing us to what it means to live a life of prayer, and be in communion with the Lord。 If you desire your relationship with the Lord to become more deep and personal, I highly recommend reading Beholding。 I feel like I’m learning how to pray without being told specifically how to pray, and have been lead on a journey I was so excited for this book because of the way Strahan’s music and poems have changed the way I viewed my relationship with God。 Yet again his writing does such a good job of pointing us to what it means to live a life of prayer, and be in communion with the Lord。 If you desire your relationship with the Lord to become more deep and personal, I highly recommend reading Beholding。 I feel like I’m learning how to pray without being told specifically how to pray, and have been lead on a journey to discover my own personal intimacy with Christ。 I can guarantee you will not regret reading this book。 。。。more

I’ve always struggled to bridge the gap between asking boldly in prayer for God to work through me and through others in the works versus simply resting in the presence of God in prayer and taking delight in his with-ness。 Strahan’s beautifully laid out how truly beholding God is actually the way that we are empowered/sanctified to act as Jesus’ hands and feet in the world。 Also it really challenged me。 We all have self-imposed expectations about what our prayers must be like or how God sees us。 I’ve always struggled to bridge the gap between asking boldly in prayer for God to work through me and through others in the works versus simply resting in the presence of God in prayer and taking delight in his with-ness。 Strahan’s beautifully laid out how truly beholding God is actually the way that we are empowered/sanctified to act as Jesus’ hands and feet in the world。 Also it really challenged me。 We all have self-imposed expectations about what our prayers must be like or how God sees us。 And often, as in my case, they are more dehumanizing than dignifying。 A wrong view of prayer and of God ultimately leads us to dehumanize ourselves and others and it fails to bring Kingdom。 Thank you Strahan! 。。。more
